Our students are carefully selected to participate in our exchange program through an extensive application process that includes an English proficiency exam and an interview in English. Before their departure to the United States, students also attend an orientation given by our overseas partner in their home country.
In addition, our students:
• Are covered by comprehensive insurance;
• Have their own pocket money to cover miscellaneous expenses;
• Are required to bring a credit card with them or set up a bank account in order to pay for personal expenses;
• Speak English at an acceptable level to participate in studies; pass a proficiency exam;
• Have strong academics: our Local Representatives will help you work with the guidance counselor to make sure they are placed in the right classes and will monitor their progress;
• Will engage in our public diplomacy program.
Cultural Adjustment for Students:
• Adapting to life in the U.S. with a new American family is a challenge for both students and families. For the student, there is a natural curve of adjustment throughout the timeline of exchange. Each student’s experience is a unique set of hills and valleys that are typical for the experience. Your Local Representative will help you learn more about this cultural adjustment curve.
• Some students who are quite confident and outgoing in their home country may be shy and unsure of how to ‘fit in’ initially. The best remedy for this is to help them avoid isolation, ask them what their interests are (let them know what is available in your community/school), help them feel like they are at home (not a hotel) right away, and encourage them to get involved in the school experience as quickly as possible so they can make friends and become involved (sports, clubs, arts activities, volunteer, etc.)
